What are Dental Implants?

The term ‘Dental Implant’ refers to a small screw made of titanium or titanium zirconium that is inserted into the jaw bone at the site of a missing tooth. The initial phase of the treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic and does not require you to stay in hospital. At your first visit a temporary crown can be fitted to the implant for aesthetic purposes and you will be asked to wait for a period of several weeks while the screws bond to the bone.

This process is entirely safe as titanium is well tolerated by the human body and, once completely healed, a prosthesis is attached to the screw, forming a permanent and hard wearing bond. Implants can be used for single teeth or as a base onto which a bridge is anchored, meaning that they are also an excellent alternative to dentures
